I'm installing a garmin GPS/Comm and was just wanting feedback on a
wing tip antenna

Nathan,
I used the Garmin 250XL and I put a bent com antenna on the bottom just
forward of the foot wells, and just aft of the aileron pushrod. I placed
the transponder blade antenna in the same place on the other side. The leads
are short this way and the weight is less. I have excellent range and
clarity.
I have heard that the wingtip initialization works but not as well.

>Dear Nathan,

I installed my GPS antenna on a small shelf on the engine side of the firewall just low enough so that the top cowl clears the antenna. I space in out about a inch so that the firewall flange doesnn't interfer with reception. Make a triangular shaped shelf just large enough for the antenna and rivit or bolt it to the firewall. Do not paint over it with a metalic fleck paint. All other paints do not damage reception. Also, you will have a antenna cable less than 24" long which will improve reception.
I installed A Bob Archer VOR/GS antenna and Com antenna in the wing tips, as well as a AE transponder in the wing tips. All work well. Slightly better transcom performance can be achieved with an external whip antenna, however I did not want anything sticking outside my airplane. Note: the Archer transcom antenna must be mounted as near vertical as possible, however, 45 degrees is about all you will have room for.

Do you happen to have any pics of your com antenna? I'm in the process
of installing my two Archer antennae and could use some suggestions.
