Home -> Vans Air Force topic: 1/4 in nylon tubing fittings

Author: Bob Goodman <wgoodman@...> Time: Wed Sep 18, 2002 11:43 am PDT Link

can anybody point me to a source for compression fittings for the 1/4
inch I.D. nylon tubing that van's uses for static lines? i looked at
lowe's. they had the tubing but no fittings, only a couple of brass
ones.

also, while i have your attention, where do most rv-8's have the flap
switch? i was thinking beside the quadrant, i don't know. i'm kind of
afraid it will be in the way there, since i don't have my quadrant yet.

thanks

Bob

Napa Auto Parts has the 3/16th compression with the 1/8th NPT fitting that
will work, in brass.

I operate my flaps from the stick via a relay mounted behind the
panel--works great.

This method didn't work for me. I initially used all brass "T"'s and male
pipe-thread adapters for the instruments; the ones that use a small
olive-shaped crushable piece of soft brass around the outside of the tubing
so it won't pull out of the fitting.
The hose isn't strong enough to resist crushing or kinking when the collar
is tightened. Every one of mine leaked-only a little, but together, they
added up.
Ended up buying all new Parker QuiknTite fittings at a local fitting supply
house. They turned out to be cheaper than the brass anyways.

Dear Bob,
May I suggest that you consider the use of better tube and fittings for this and other lines, vacuum and pressure. I used a relatively new design fittings that are regularly used in industry on both liquid and air transmission lines. It is known as "Legris" fittings. These are sold by most companies that cater to industry users of flex lines and fittings for air, hydraulic etc. They also have a polyurethane tube specifically design for both vacuum and low pressure applications. The fittings are constructed of both carbon fiber and metal and use a patented quick disconnect seal with a viton O ring. That come in allmost any conceivable configuration. Note, tube also comes in different colors. Very convenient for Pitot and static lines.

Bob....
A/c Spruce has the fittings you need as well as an
assortment of different types of plastic tubing. I
don`t know where Van gets the tubing he supplies, but
from what I`ve seen it`s the most flexible. The
equivalent from Spruce seems to be somewhat stiffer,
but useable.
I mounted my flap switch at the aft end of the
quadrant, below the round cut-out,on the part that
angles outboard. Look at your quadrant mounting part,
I forget the part no. and you`ll see what I mean. I
think it`s a good spot. You can hook your thumb over
the edge of the cut-out with your left index finger on
the switch toggle when selecting "up", and it`s right
where you need it to be when selecting "down". works
for me.
