I am at the stage of construction on my 6A where the subject of gear
leg stiffeners needs to be addressed. The manual suggests that
shimmy most often occurs at 10-15 MPH on paved surfaces and can be a
rather "nebulous" thing, some airplanes suffer from it, others don't.
Seems like a lot of extra work to me, not to mention weight for a
condition that may or may not be a factor in the first place. I can
always add the stiffeners later if need be. Right? Anyway, I
encourage responses from those who fly with and without the gear leg
stiffeners. Oh, and please note the type of surface you most usually
operate from.

Van's does not recommend stiffners any more. Mine
didn't have them, and didn't feel the need for them.
Most people that you will talk to probably will agree.
Save yourself the time and do another task.

Recommendations or not, the shimmy at the speeds mentioned are real (in my case w/longer legs) and a little more than disconcerting as one taxis to the terminal. The taxi speed has to be adjusted to the vibration and that is usually too fast, or v e r y Slow.
All the while the wheel pants, fairings, et al are getting "all shook up" as the speed is adjusted.

James, is yours a 6 or a 6A... or does it make any difference?

Don't make up your mind until you've flown. We saw at least 6 of the
RV's flying formation at OSH with a MAJOR shimmy as they taxied out/in
from the flight line.

Larry, I have the -4, but it sounds like a trans-numeral concern. I had the tires (new) balanced and that helped, but at the speed cited there is considerable shimmy. Who knows?

Strange. I never noticed it with mine. The plane
taxied just fine at just about any speed, except very
fast, which isn't very safe anyway. Normal idle taxi
speed had zero shimmy.

I have a -4 and the older style wheel pants. The aluminum plates that
supports and holds the wheel pants on seems to keep breaking at the bolt
location behind the calipers. The plate then starts to bend and rub
into the disc. Has anyone else had this problem and would it be ok to
make this plate out of stainless? I do fly off grass strip that is
somewhatt rough at times.

Greg: Check out attawayair.com for .063 stainless brackets.
Apparently enough people have had this problem for some entrepreneur
to justify an upgrade. My original query under this topic has to do
with anyone with first hand experience with the RV-6A shimmy
phenomena and if I should
go ahead and install gear leg stiffeners before first flight.
