what drill size is used for this blind rivet? (MSP-42 blind rivet). It
is called out for the pushrods (6 in each end). If it's not #30,
which I have already drilled in one end,.......what can you use as a
substitute rivet that fits #30? Or do I buy a new pushrod and start
over? *&%#@
thanks, Jack

This is one of many similiar situations you will face over time. I
would suggest that you invest in a digital micrometer, and a drill
index card (which can be found in the back of many tool catalogs.) I
refer to mine constantly. The MSP-42 mics out at .123 therefore a
1/8 drill (.125) should be used. The #30 drill is too big at .1285
and given that blind rivets are not nearly as strong as solid
fasteners, and that vibration will weaken them even further over
time, that MSP-42 will not hold very well if at all in the
larger hole. I would place a call to Van's technical support for
further advice.

Jack,
The 30 is just right. Put the rivets in and pull them and move on.
You will use the 30 for all the blind rivets used on the kit. Some
times it takes a little force to get them to go in but tey will fit.
Once you pull a few of them, the ends will be so tight they will
never move.

Jack,
If there is any doubt in your mind regarding the rivet being able to
fill the hole and pull up, take one and pull it. Then measure the
ball it makes when the mandrel is pulled through the rivet. The MSP-
42 rivets are probably some of the strongest of the blind rivets you
will use in the plane.
On my #30 bits, I had trouble getting the rivet to go into the hole.
It worked just fine on all of the rivets throughout the plane.
Call Vans Support if there is any lingering doubt in your mind about
it.
