finished fitting the canopy today, and cut it in half and did some final
trim and sanding of edges. ok so far, but at this point i dont care if
the thing breaks into 3 pieces. if it does, i'll just make a 3-piece
canopy.

that was the only part of the whole dang thing so far i didn't enjoy. all
i need to do now is screw up my courage to actually drill a hole in the
thing. i hate plexiglas.

it sure looks good, though. i got to go to lowes tomorrow and buy a
plexiglass bit. i got some, but i think they are too big. i'll go read
the directions again and make sure i get the right size.

i got to get this thing in the air. i wonder how it would fly without
wingtips. the mooooooney seems to fly ok with squared off wingtips. i'm
sure i'm going to hate fiberglass as much as i hate plexiglass. and i had
a friend once who had a supercub with a spray tank on it that flew it
without a cowl.

tomorrow i got to change the oil in the moooooooooney and after that i'm
going to work on my panel.

Hi Bob,

Rather than using a plexiglass bit to drill the holes in the canopy
have you considered using a unibit? Several of us used the unibit
and it works just fine. I would practice on scrap first of course.
Drill the plexiglass using a regular #40 bit and then use the unibit
to open up the hole. Works great.

We all used Unibits to drill the plexi. Worked great. Keep the plexi
as warm as you can stand! Remember to drill the hole oversize to
accomidate expansion/contraction and flexing. Then slightly c'sink
the hole and smooth everything out with fine sandpaper or
scotchbrite wheel. Yes, the canopy sucks. Yes, you will hate
fibreglas even more... sorry!

So you hate plexi, eh? Just wait till you get to
the windshield fairing. Plexi AND fiberglass. And when
you`re done there, you`ve still got the cowl, and
wingtips, gear legs, wheels, intersections.......all
part of the fun. How does any body survive building
one of those ALL plastic machines.

so, i need a unibit. is it in aircraft spruce or lowe's? maybe mike
ballard has one i can borrow.

the canopy is drilled with a no. 40 and clecoed, along with the
windscreen. looks like a million dang dollars. i also built a bracket
for the elt and put it in the tailcone, except for one rivet i couldnt get
to. i forget what else i did today. oh yeah, i cut wood for the heater.
it will be winter before you know it. and i went to church twice (seems
like once should be enough, i didn't do much last week to repent for) and
went jogging. it was a nice day.

saturday i went to atlanta in the moooooney to hang out with my neighbor
at the conferederdated air forces hangar. i dont think those guys like to
fly or work on airplanes, they just like to get away from their wives or
something. ony guy flying, one guy working, and 20 guys jawboning.

anyway, i met a guy with an rv8 and it was really nice but not painted
yet. he really liked it a lot and i was angling for a ride but then his
wife called him on the phone so i just came on back to alabama instead.
it was at peachtree falcon or something like that, i forget exactly. he
says he's going to build another one soon. he had about 30 functions on
his joystick. i think i'm going to use a bicycle grip with a ptt in the
top.

now i got to got to mobile to look at cotton for 2 days. why oh why wasnt
i born a man of independent means. can you say mosquitos? can you say
gnats? can you say hot and muddy? i knew you could. at least i don't
live below the gnat line, i only have to visit.

i wonder if it's mosquitoes. ask dan qayle i guess.
