Home -> Vans Air Force topic: Portable GPS?

All,

I'm real close to getting my PPL and seriously thinking about
getting a portable GPS. The question is, which one? Control Vision
or Garmin 196? I like them both and they are within a couple of
hundred dollars of each other. Those who have used either, or both,
your comments and suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

I upgraded to the 196 from the 195 when I was guaranteed delivery
before Airventure 2002. The 195 is a tough act to follow but the 196
does it and much more. In addition to a yoke mount, it also comes
with a dash mount and I drove to Oshkosh using its ground mode to
great advantage. When flying, the panel page is awesome. The folks at
Garmin told me at Oshkosh one the toughest technical challenges was
in the sensitivity requirements to make the turn cooridinator work.
You really can fly the airplane using that panel page but Garmin is
quick to note the VFR limitations and you must agree to that before
you can access. Clever product liability protection. Aviation,
ground, and marine GPS in one package.

I've owned the 195, 295, and 196, in that order. The 196 is my favorite --
fast, crisp screen, intuitive. Someone demoed their AnyWhereMap to me (it
locked up during the demo). It was 'cool', but I couldn't get over it's
itsy-bitsy buttons and stylus.

I doubt you'd be disappointed in the 196.
