On a similar subject.... for those flying with the Garmin 196 Handheld GPS mounted on the glareshield (ie. not panel mounted).... is the built-in antenna sufficient or is the external "hockey puck" antenna required?
Thanks,
Jack

Bill,
I used this little devil for a few years. Worked great and is very small.

I initially used it with the built in antenna. What I found is that it takes
longer for it to acquire and it looses the satellites easier. I attached the
external antenna and everything works as advertised. I mounted the antenna
on the dashboard in front of the compass and made a mount to hold the GPS at
the bottom of the instrument panel angled up. I had to drill a hole for the
antenna connector to pass through the instrument panel. That was the only
bad part. I think I have some pictures if you are interested.

Thanks for the reply Bill.....
I hate to add the external antenna if the built-in one will do the job. You have confirmed what I have found when using the G-196 mounted on the dash of my Dodge Ram P/U.... built-in antenna works fine.
