Just a minor request in the interest of keeping a tidy inbox and
list.

Some questions posted here are requests for information. They're
usually very directly answered and are very helpful.

Some questions are posed to win an argument. They usually lead to
about a two-week exchange in which nothing is settled (nobody
ever "wins" an argument on the Internet<g>.) and it makes it really
tough to find the good information through the noise.

To the extent that you're trying to help builders, thanks. It seems
to me on some issues, however that a phonecall to a company you may
be questioning might yield the answers in a more efficient manner,
keep the signal-to-noise ratio down, and you can then post the
answers here.

Everybody wins.

Just a thought.

Although I do not participate in the noise generally, I would argue
that is is a discussion group, not a questions and answers group.
This is in fact a place for open discussions and debates to take
place on the topics of group interest.
Human nature quickly turn Q&A into thoughtful discussions. Its the
nature of the beast.

Sure, I agree. It is a discussion group. But in court when a
prosecutor and a witness go at it, they're not really having
a "discussion" even though one is asking a question and the other is
answering them. What it is, basically, is rhetorical combat.

That's my point. If the idea is legitimately to get answers to
questions one doesn't know, let it fly. No problem. OTOH, if what
we're looking at is a campaign between rivals, I'm not sure what the
point of the exercise is.

There are some cases where an Internet bulletin board is tremendously helpful. OTOH, picking up the phone and calling the other person and going back and forth would seem like an effective way to get the answers.

But, I don't think that's what the engine thread is about.

Oh come on. I've been monitoring 4 of the lists for more than 2 years now. I
read most of the posts. I enjoy the exchanges. If you don't want to read all
of it, use discretion. It's not that hard. It's kind of like the TV, you can
always turn it off. I start my day with a cup of coffee and the lists.
Wouldn't have it any other way.

It would certainly be ironic if the message started another debate.
Like I said, it was minor rquest. Pleased the list is working for
you.
