I acquired an RV-4 with a wood prop on an IO-360. I have had the plane about 6 months and have noticed the varnish is coming off where the hub melds into the blade. Can I simply revarnish that or does this need more extensive work? Is this an owner job or is it a shop job?
Thanks,
Joe

I had the same thing happen to me about 1 year ago and I sent it to Judith Saber at Performance Propellers in Patagonia, AZ. I had them do leading edges, complete refinish and painted tips all done within 2 weeks and it still looks like new after 250 hours and some rain flying. You can reach her at 520-394-2059

Hi Joe,
I am a member of the RV list as well as the Mustang and Thorp list, but own a Mustang II.
I am in the process of refurbishing my wooden prop for my Mustang II due to the aging of the varnish.
I have talked with the tech reps at Sensenich Propellor and they have been very helpful in explaining
how to go about reconditioning wood homebuilt props that are not there own. They will actually recondition
it for you and yellow tag it. If the job is a small one, it would more economically feasible to do it yourself.
You can use 150 grit wood working sandpaper to smooth down the edges and area to be revarnished and blow
away dust. Sensenich does not recommend using any chemical strippers, cleaners, or soap and water to clean
the affected area after light sanding as this may introduce moisture or affect lamination adhesion. Apply one coat of exterior grade polyeurathane spar varnish with a small horse hair brush from your local hardware store. Being careful
not to overlap existing varnished edges around area to be worked more than 1/16th" .You want to replace varnish
not layer it by covering non affected areas. Balance should not be a problem.
Regards,
John Harden
