Bill,
I've been watching these PDA-based solutions for some time, and have used a
simple one in my glider with great success to run glide computer software.
As I contemplate what to put in the panel of my new RV-3B project these look
attractive but I still have two major concerns...
1. The PocketPC operating system is a typical Microsoft product and is
complicated and bloated code and therefore prone to crashing, and managing
it does require some real understanding of it. Anyone concerned about OS
stability?
2. The interface looks like it requires a stylus -- anyone concerned about
using a stylus while bouncing around in a cockpit?
Thoughts on these?

Randy,
For the last 3 years I have used Compaq IPAQs (now a 3955) for
navigation and final glide calculation/display in my competition glider
(LS 8-18). The software I run is WinPilot (see winpilot.com), connected
to a GPS source in my Cambridge 302 flight recorder/variometer. I never
experienced any problems with the IPAQ in over 300 hours of
cross-country flying (or with the rest of the glider for that matter).
Stylus is not required with WinPilot, you can use your finger with good
success. The software has "soft keys" that are big enough to operate in
the very restricted glider environment. I mounted the IPAQ to the
center of the instrument panel, in fact I designed the panel 'around'
the IPAQ and am really happy with it.

There is a company out there that sells fingertip styluses (styli?) Might make it easier to operate. Here is a comparisson of three models:
http://www.the-gadgeteer.com/fingerstyli-review.html
I'll give you a head's up on the only problem I've run into while using PDA based navigation. The combination of an iPAQ 5555, PPC 2003 (the OS), running Control Vision's Anywhere Map and using a BlueTooth GPS is a bad combination. It will display warning messages about every 10 - 30 seconds that it lost the GPS. The GPS will other wise continue to happily send it's data stream. There are workarounds that most non-geekoids will not tolerate.
So the only caviat that I can give you is IF you decide to go with Anywhere Map and IF you get a late model iPAQ or Axim, and IF you want to use a BlueTooth GPS (no wires) then make sure you buy the GPS receiver from Control Vision. Or go with Blue Mountain or Teletype for your moving map software.
As far as the unit itself, I've never had a problem with it crashing.

I was showing a buddy of mine the Mountain Scope software yesterday, and
made a point to not use the stylus... I could do just about anything I
wanted with out it... The menus are very intuitive and easy to navigate
without the stylus... I am confident that I could use it with no problem
with just my thumb, and could easily steady my hand on the iPAQ in
turbulence...
I need to get back in the air to try it out though... Here' some advice...
If it's flying, leave it alone! This upgrades crap sucks!
