Anyone have any experience with having a Microair Radio repaired? Is there
a repair shop in the US?

I have a Microair 760 comm and a T2000 transponder. I haven't had to have
the comm worked on, but I assume it's the same as their transponder, which
has to be sent back to Australia for repairs. Should have mine back in a
week or two, sigh...

Hey Mark...

Good news... I called Microair last night and talked to one of their
techs... I told him the two things I THOUGHT I might have done to damage my
radio, which was; key the mic without an antenna, and operate the radio with
too low a voltage, and he told me neither one of those should have damaged
the radio... He told me to make a test cable and power up the radio on the
bench...

So I went back out to the hangar last night, did that and it worked fine...
Hooked everything back up in the plane again.....It all worked perfectly...
(I've had a battery charger on for a day at this point) ...so I guess the
low voltage that my battery was putting out wasn't enough for things to work
properly... So anyway, I don't need to get my radio repaired after all...

he also told me to have it repaired, if need be, would only be about two
weeks turn around, and he has never seen one that was more than $100 to
fix...

That makes perfect sense. You've jarred my memory. I used to have an Aeronca Champ with a battery and a wind-driven generator. When the battery got low, keying the mike did make that pronouced squeal in my headsets and broadcast quality was extremely scratchy. I didn't even think to ask about your battery.

Sounds like MicroAir has some pretty good tech guys.

Yeah, the guys at Microair were great... He said in his opinion it would
take a lot to break the radio, and that makes me feel good...

Just watch out for that problem they have with wierd characters showing up in the display. Another member of one of these forums pointed me to the right answer. I also downloaded a doc from MicroAir that shows how to fix it. There is a chip on the display board that had it's pins over stressed when it was installed. You have to pop that chip out and very gently bend the legs out just a tad. Then pop the chip back in. That happened within the first 10 hours of using mine. After that procedure, it's never missed a beat.

Hey!

I saw those!
On the way back from Mustang Beach the other day I changed frequencies,
and after toggling the standby to active, the whole display changed to
something out of the Predator movie! Squiglies!

Fortunately it took my frequency change. I cycled power on the radio -
nada. Transmit/receive was OK.

After landing and shutdown for fuel, when I turned the master back on,
the display came back to a normal display. Hasn't done it since.

Will have to open that little guy up and check the circuit board.
Opps! Will I void the warranty?

Not if you don't tell anyone. ;-)

I can't seem to post any files here but I posted the HOW-TO in the RV-4 Yahoo group in the files section. You can also go to the MicroAir website. In their support section they have a Service Bulletin in PDF form you can download that tells you exactly what to do. One special chip puller is required. You can buy them at Radio Shack cheap.

Mine did the same as your, came and went but then it came and stayed. After I did the fix, no problems since.

I had a Microair and I would say it is marginal, although it may have been
my installation. I did have to send it back to Australia once and had to do
the bullitin on the strange characters. Great idea, but in reality I did
not have the best results.
