Hi Randy,
I used the Ipaq PDA and anywhere software and love them, but I also had a 195 that was always there when the OS went south. The features in the software of having private airports listed plus the cone of safety allow you to almost always have a grass strip within gliding distance in Fla if you are around 3000 feet altitude. I understand they will offer something with a larger display at SnF.
How did you make out with the insurance deal on your plane? Sorry if you already posted because I was off list for a while.

Hi Ron. How is it going? Spring is coming and looking forward to lots of
flying. Are u coming to SnF? I plan to go April 16-19.
Did u add a remote oil filter? If so, who's and cost, etc.

Hi Joe,
I am a member of the RV list as well as the Mustang and Thorp list, but own a Mustang II.
I am in the process of refurbishing my wooden prop for my Mustang II due to the aging of the varnish.
I have talked with the tech reps at Sensenich Propellor and they have been very helpful in explaining
how to go about reconditioning wood homebuilt props that are not there own. They will actually recondition
it for you and yellow tag it. If the job is a small one, it would more economically feasible to do it yourself.
You can use 150 grit wood working sandpaper to smooth down the edges and area to be revarnished and blow
away dust. Sensenich does not recommend using any chemical strippers, cleaners, or soap and water to clean
the affected area after light sanding as this may introduce moisture or affect lamination adhesion. Apply one coat of exterior grade polyeurathane spar varnish with a small horse hair brush from your local hardware store. Being careful
not to overlap existing varnished edges around area to be worked more than 1/16th" .You want to replace varnish
not layer it by covering non affected areas. Balance should not be a problem.

John Harden

I acquired an RV-4 with a wood prop on an IO-360. I have had the plane about 6 months and have noticed the varnish is coming off where the hub melds into the blade. Can I simply revarnish that or does this need more extensive work? Is this an owner job or is it a shop job?
Thanks,
Joe

But once you get it calibrated, you will be amazed at how accurate it is!
I have the RMI totalizer in the uMonitor, and the EI fuel gage driven
with the standard float senders. It is uncanny how closely the two
systems agree when it is time to refuel, usually within a gallon total
fuel load.
I have a confession to make; in spite of all admonitions to use a clock
to calculate fuel remaining, I have come to, uh, *trust* the combination
of RMI and EI gage. As long as they agree with each other, I use them
for monitoring remaining fuel. Of course, a timer is also reset when the
tanks are topped off, but the totalizer and gage have become the method
of choice for watching the fuel level.
If a system works well, works consistently, and works reliably, I will
use it, in spite of traditions inspired by unreliable gages in spam cans.
But then.....I'm the guy who doesn't have any "real" instruments in his
plane...... ;-)

Bill,
I've been watching these PDA-based solutions for some time, and have used a
simple one in my glider with great success to run glide computer software.
As I contemplate what to put in the panel of my new RV-3B project these look
attractive but I still have two major concerns...
1. The PocketPC operating system is a typical Microsoft product and is
complicated and bloated code and therefore prone to crashing, and managing
it does require some real understanding of it. Anyone concerned about OS
stability?
2. The interface looks like it requires a stylus -- anyone concerned about
using a stylus while bouncing around in a cockpit?
Thoughts on these?

Randy,
For the last 3 years I have used Compaq IPAQs (now a 3955) for
navigation and final glide calculation/display in my competition glider
(LS 8-18). The software I run is WinPilot (see winpilot.com), connected
to a GPS source in my Cambridge 302 flight recorder/variometer. I never
experienced any problems with the IPAQ in over 300 hours of
cross-country flying (or with the rest of the glider for that matter).
Stylus is not required with WinPilot, you can use your finger with good
success. The software has "soft keys" that are big enough to operate in
the very restricted glider environment. I mounted the IPAQ to the
center of the instrument panel, in fact I designed the panel 'around'
the IPAQ and am really happy with it.

There is a company out there that sells fingertip styluses (styli?) Might make it easier to operate. Here is a comparisson of three models:
http://www.the-gadgeteer.com/fingerstyli-review.html
I'll give you a head's up on the only problem I've run into while using PDA based navigation. The combination of an iPAQ 5555, PPC 2003 (the OS), running Control Vision's Anywhere Map and using a BlueTooth GPS is a bad combination. It will display warning messages about every 10 - 30 seconds that it lost the GPS. The GPS will other wise continue to happily send it's data stream. There are workarounds that most non-geekoids will not tolerate.
So the only caviat that I can give you is IF you decide to go with Anywhere Map and IF you get a late model iPAQ or Axim, and IF you want to use a BlueTooth GPS (no wires) then make sure you buy the GPS receiver from Control Vision. Or go with Blue Mountain or Teletype for your moving map software.
As far as the unit itself, I've never had a problem with it crashing.
