Home -> Vans Air Force topic: Loose Altrak servo.

Author: Ron Lee <ronlee@...> Time: Mon Mar 15, 2004 7:21 pm PST Link

I was looking at Bobby Hargraves website and noticed a potentially
serious situation with a loose Altrak servo.

This is his discussion and pics of the issue (hopefully not breaching
any netiquette by doing this)

Breahcing netiquette?
What are you kidding me?
What could be more important than this.
We need to find out some additional info. How many hours on
installation?
What is the manufacturers response? etc.

My plane is grounded until I get an answer to this.
There is no fooling around with flight controls.
If my servo bacame loose, I do not know what would happen to the
control arm its attached to. There is a strong possibility of jamming
up the controls. My installation is here:
http://www.mstewart.net/michael/rv/flying/altrak/index.htm

Not to mention that 2lb weight banging around in my tail would
probably dent some stuff up.

Im calling em today.
Mike

Servo motors falling apart, flap motors leaking grease...

Is it asking too much to expect these things to just work?

Ron,

Thanks for posting this information, a very heads up move.

I have about 90 hours on my unit and it has not come apart but I
will remove the screws and reinstall with some lock tite.

dd

PS This system is the best I have seen in a small airplane. I am
sure the manufacturer will come up with a fix and I don't think we
need jump down their throat too much as stuff does happen with
everything in this business. Thank goodness we have these
forums to spead the word.

There is another potential control problem that exists
and that is with the Digitrak servo mounting. If you
look at Bobby Hargrave's installation (which is
typical for the Digitrak product) you can see that if
the inboard, top servomotor screw was to come loose
and back out, that it would jam the servo arm and
possibly block or limit the amount of aileron control
you have. To prevent that, I simply drilled the servo
hole all the way through and installed a longer AN3
with a fiberlock nut at the other end. Might be worth
checking out....

Unfortunately our lives aren't experimental! :-)
