Has anyone had any experience with the tip-up canopy struts failing
after very limited use? Is there a solution other than buying new
ones?
thanks, jack #90508

Jack, I bought mine from a camper supply place, they are for a pickup cap
rear window. Been on for a couple of years, no problems. About $15 apiece.

I had one fail very early on, during the canopy installation. Van's
sent me a new one, give 'em a call. I looked for the same part locally
but couldn't find it.

I had one to fail before the first flight.
Van replaced it. But I thing we just need to buy a supply of them.
I have a ton of them of my work truck doors and I keep an ample
supply.

Make sure that the barrel end (fat end) of the gas spring is mounted
to the canopy and is tipped up when the canopy is raised. This lets
the oil flow around the o-ring seal that is between the barrel and
ram. If the seal doesn't get oiled, the high pressure (really high
pressure) gas charge will leak out in a short time. We have that
issue on farm equipment (combine shielding gas springs.)
