Hi folks,
Lucky Macy has asked a similar question to this on the Lycoming group,
but I thought I would post it here, and make it a little more specific
to my set up.
Does anyone out there have an IO-360-A1B6D or IO-360-A3B6D as well as
an RMI uMonitor (MicroMonitor) engine instrument ? And if you do,
does the tach indicate the proper RPM ?
Neither I nor Ron Mowrer at RMI can figure out why mine displays
random values when hooked up on the aircraft, but the proper values
when stimulated on the test bench.
A ring terminal is attached to each p-lead lug on the back of the key
switch. Each of those goes through a capacitor, then both go to the
same pin on the back of the instrument. I have rung these connections
through with a meter, so I have continuity throughout the circuit, and
the wires go to the proper pins.
Any help would be appreciated.
Cheers
Mark

You have pretty much the standard setup for the RMI - my wiring goes out to the mags themselves, using the caps thence to the RMI.
Can't imagine a difference between carb and injected engines.
You have of course checked the program settings for number of cylinders/pulses per revolution?
Four cylinders and 2 pulses for our setups.
Your sending line shields are tied together and properly grounded?

Some month ago I had a similar problem with the RPM read out of my
RMI engine monitor. In my RV I have one magneto and one Electroair
ignition system. I can via a switch use the pulse from either the
magneto or the electronic ignition system to generate the RPM
function.
After about 500 hours on the RV and OH engine + new magneto I
experience similar problems when the pulse from the magneto P lead
was used to generate the RPM output. The problem was due to the
magneto showing signs of wear (normal with Slic magnetos at 500
hours). Basically the pulse obtained from the P lead which is in the
region of 110 volts was no longer a clean signal as there were
probably additional spikes causing the counter in the RMI
microprocessor to give a non consistent reading. After a complete
OH of the magneto everything worked fine again.
Are your magnetos new or recently OH? If they are worn out this may
be the cause of the problem. See if only one magneto is causing the
problem by running the engine on either the left or right magneto to
see if a consistent RPM is obtained when running off only one
magneto.
