Home -> Vans Air Force topic: New Andair fuel selector

Author: "Dave Parsons" <rvy@...> Time: Fri Dec 3, 2004 3:51 pm PST Link

I posted this in the -7 group, but didn't hear anything back. Maybe
folks here have some idea:

It looks like Andair is selling a new variant of the fuel selector
valve that has the left and right positions 45 degrees off from
straight forward with the inlets in the corresponding positions. See
the Andair web site, http://www.andair.co.uk/system/index.html, click
on fuel selectors, 3/8", then FS20X7. From looking at other builders'
pictures of the fuel lines in the selector enclosure, it looks like
this valve might fit into the standard RV-7/7A and RV-9/9A enclosure
with less problems. Has anyone tried using this new selector, or can
guess if it would work or not?

This may avoid the expensive banjo fittings. However, since ordering
direct from Andair is more expensive than Van's this may be a wash.
Maybe we can get Van's to stock this valve, too?

I *think* that chiefaircraft sells them.

Curious, why wouldn't Edlebrock carberator Banjo
fittings work? $20 at checker auto

Dave, I just went through the Andair problem with my 7A and I ended
up using a suggestion from this group. I tapped the Andair inlets
deeper so the elbows would screw in to where there were only one or
two threads showing. Then I made a new top for the housing (I had
already drilled the one that came in the kit in the center) and
drilled the one inch hole back a liitle further. You have to do some
measuring because the Andair's nice faceplate will hit the center
spar if you go back too far. Anyway it looks like it's going to work.
Plumbing the fuel lines to the Airflow performance pump and to an
Andair gascolator between the fuselage and left wing is a real bear!

Dave,
It's not just a matter of adding banjo fittings.
There are special adapters (female straight thread for
the banjo bolts) which must be added after the stock
male AN fittings are removed from the Andair valve.

Not directly related to the original question...but I gotta know...

If you're plumbing to the AFP pump, then I'm guessing you also have
their filter (tell me if you don't so I don't sound completely out
or whack here).

If you are using the AFP pump/filter package, then why the
gascolator?? Also, are you using just 1 gascolator, and if so why
the wing bay?

No worries, I'm just curious..

Cheers,

Yes I'm using Van's AFP kit that includes the filter.

I'm using the gascolator for water removal and drainage. I'm putting
the gascolator between the fuselage and left wing down near the
bottom of the wing where I can drain it thru a hole in the wing gap
seal. It will be at a very low point so water should be trapped
there. Yes I know it like wearing a belt and suspenders but the AFP
filter is not there to collect water and if it did you can't really
check or drain it other than during an inspection or other
maintenance. Certainly not before each flight.
