Home -> Vans Air Force topic: Builders insurance You decide which company!

JT, Since you made this a public issue, I will respond publicly. I had
called your company for a quote, and quite frankly enjoyed talking to you,
and sharing our past experiences as helicopter pilots in public service.
You passed me off to one of your employees who would provide the quote. You
said it would be a couple of days because you were going out of town. In
the mean time I requested a quote from SkySmith. They responded to me
within 30 minutes with a price of $276 for a policy that started at $25K,
and graduated within the year to $35K. I waited for 2 days until your
employee responded, your quote was almost double. He wanted to re check the
figure, which I allowed him more time to do. He called me back much later
and again told me there must be something wrong and requested various
printed numbers on my faxed quote from SkySmith. At this point I decided to
stop doing business with your company, and go with the company that not only
gave me the best price, but did it quickly and with good customer service. I
HAVE JUST CONFIRMED WITH SKYSMITH that my policy is correct, with the price
and coverage quoted. They also told me you had called them asking
questions. I realize brokers work with the same companies, but in this case
the brokers at SkySmith came out well above your company. I would recommend
them to anyone (800-743-1439). Glenn in Arizona -9A fuselage.

Sir, you are in error. I've talked to both the underwriter at AIG
and to Skysmith directly. The coverage you got from him was for 25K
only. It did not include the value increasing up to 35K (which is
what you asked for and got from NationAir as an AIG quote.)

AIG quotes exactly the same to all agents. When I spoke to
SkySmith, he was upset because apparently some of his customers said
that I had posted that he'd misrepresented something. Well, I
didn't. But, you do need to contact him and confirm the coverage
because it is not as you are describing here on this list presently.

If you purchase it that way thru SkySmith it'll be the same price
which Aaron in my office quoted to you. I asked the underwriter to
consider flat cancelling what SkySmith had bound for you and
rewriting it the way you apparently want it. But, you'll need to
contact SkySmith to arrange that.

I am just not willing for your misunderstanding what you have asked
for and received to make it appear as though SkySmith gets lower
quotes than other agents. That just is not true. He is a good
agent, though don't get me wrong. He's just not BETTER nor does he
get lower quotes than other agents.

It seems that all this arguing over who charges what for which level of coverage could be quickly and easily resolved by simply reading the ACTUAL POLICY PAGES. Right now all we have is a bunch of he said/he said, and some people getting offended. The unfortunate truth is that most of us don't really know just what is/is not covered in our various insurance policies until we need to make a claim.

My builder's risk policy through NationAir was quoted at $400 and all coverages were at the level they had promised. I know this because I actually READ the contract. It's not that I don't trust the guy giving the verbal quote, but miscommunications happen all the time. Better safe than sorry later.

JT, I don't know how to answer you anymore and in fact this is my final
reply to your posts. I have AGAIN talked to the owner of SkySmith who has
told me AGAIN my policy is for the amount I have stated, which he confirmed
AGAIN today with the underwriter, not in the amount that you keep referring
to. My policy is in print and if you wish to rent a billboard I would be
glad to have it enlarged and posted for all to see. I do not know what your
motivation is here, but several RV friends have told me they will go
elsewhere for their insurance needs as a result of your false accusations
about the policy I purchased from SkySmith. Glenn in Arizona.

Well, I've asked the underwriter (Scott and I are speaking to the
same one) and his boss to confirm what the hell is going on. At
this point (due to your statement about you and your "friends" I'm
pretty peeved. AIG and their underwriter are stuck in the middle.
For privacy reasons, they can't discuss your information with me.

But, seeing as how AIG quotes things the same to me and Scott and
every other broker out there, in a situation like this I asked the
underwriter why Scott would get a lower quote. The underwriter
(being intelligent and not interested in getting in trouble with
Scott... which he did anyway as Scott assumed he'd simply fed me the
info) informed me of how I could lower that particular quote down to
$276. That is to remove the 35K higher end value and do it at a
straight 25K.

I think it is obvious, but to spell it out for you... My motivation
is to thwart your inference that Skysmith can do things at a lower
price than I can.

Scott Skysmith is flat out wrong. I didn't and still don't intend
to say anything negative about him, so I'll merely say that perhaps
he's merely confused now.

AIG quoted Scott and us (once you told us you had a quote at $276)
the same thing. 25K value maximum was $276. Doing it as a variable
rate from 25 to 35K increased the premium to $373. I've confirmed
that with the underwriter more than once.

I believe that pure and simple this is a case where you asked Scott
to quote it one way, and asked us for something else.

If you have a claim this policy year for more than $25K and AIG pays
out the max on the policy of $25K, I know some good attorneys you
might want to use for your Errors and Ommissions case against Scott.

It would sure be nice if we could see a copy of this policy on the net to
end this thread once and for all or you two should fax back and forth.
Please remember that I'm on nobodys side. I'm not a what if person, so I
don't carry builders ins. In fact some of the nicest golf coarses I play on
are owned by ins. company's that are just making ends meet. Now having said
all that I think JT does a lot of work for RV's, Where else can you go to
your favorite site and get a ins. quote. So now everyone can email me and
tell me how stupid I am for not insuring every step I take, in fact email my
wife so she has more people on her side.

I would like to end this thread now for once and for all. I don't like
pissing people off, I am really a nice guy! I just don't like being told
that what I have said or done is not true or is incorrect, when it is in
fact so. Since my last post I have gotten some additional information from
my company. It seems like they quoted me low, but since they did so, they
decided to eat it and give me the policy. So yes, I did get the policy for
what I said I did, and yes, the policy is for $25K graduating to $35K. This
explains why JT said it couldn't be so. Bottom line, I guess we both had
our points, and I admit I could have been cooler about it, just pushes my
buttons when people insinuate I am not telling the truth. Glenn in

I got a feeling just about everybody on here is a "nice guy/gal." I do think that sometimes email has a way of coming across badly, and I hate to see all the ill will arise as a result. Seems like we now know how it all happened -- just a misunderstanding -- and now we can get back to grousing about the high cost of insurance.

And to Glenn, congrats on getting a bargain on your coverage.

My sympathy to you guys who reside in a land where insurance is mandatory, that your have an aircraft loan or that you feel so insecure that you must purchase an insurance policy. I suppose that urban correctness or a lack of faith in your own skills makes you feel vulnerable to the degree that you fall prey to insurance companies. With regard to hull insurance, insurance, companies are thieves and robbers and they thrive upon bureaucratic mandates and fear tactics. Have you ever had an accident or know of a case where the aircraft was totaled by the insurance company even though it was repairable?. And what percent of the value of the aircraft did they pay you/them..... enough to replace the aircraft....don't be silly, you would be lucky to get .50 cents on the dollar and they part out the aircraft to cover their .50 cents on the dollar. Liability is a bit different, if you are a commercial operator there is no way around it, but as a private party you have a choice. Fly safe...... don't hurt any one or their property and you don't need liability. If you can't sleep at night thinking about it.... just pay the price...buy the insurance. Be aware of the fact that if you are insured, have an accident and any circumstances might conceivably exist, such as negligence, violation of FAR's or anything irregular....contrary to the policy, or a niche that an attorney can get his finger into.... you are in deep trouble. Money is the bottom line and the insurance company is not necessarily your friend. They pay reluctantly and will seek any loophole to deny payment. Sorry, but my red neck is showing.... Fifty years in the business and 25,000+ hours of flying makes me a bit cynical . AVEMCO has been the only insurance company the has been fair, not cheap but realistic yet biased.... the won't insure in Alaska, regardless of the client. So if I sound a bit negative please understand that there are a lot of sour grapes on the vine.

Jim,

I'd agree with some of what you've said about insurance companies trying to avaoid paying, but I resent the whole "insecure" and "lack of faith in your own skills" business. Many of us insure to protect our families' assets, property, businesses, children's college funds, etc. Furthermore, it seems like the socially responsible thing to do. Where I live, there are thousands of uninsured auto drivers and when one of them crashes into your car, you're screwed. How is the airplane any different? It's nice that you have so many hours logged, but how will you feel if one of us lesser pilots taxis into you and has nothing more than an apology to offer?

Hi Steve,
Thanks for your reply and I respect your viewpoint.
I think that my purpose was to promote the thought process with regard to insurance companies. Remember back when two Boeing 747s collided in the fog on the Canary Islands... and all of our insurance premiums immediately increased so that the insurance companies could pay off the claims?. Well that policy hasn't changed... it is ongoing. If you are so unfortunate as to have a fender bender and you are in anyway to blame, I can assure you that your premium payments will increase. And perhaps after you have paid the premium increase to the amount that it equals the damage cost to the insurance company.... you may, and I say may, again enjoy the lower costs of the insurance premium.
My auto insurance is with USAA, has been for over 50 years, and my investments are with them..... still this same thing happened to me.
When I was operating Golden North Air as a side line, my insurance premiums, being with another company, went from 2500 a year for 4 aircraft, with hull and liability to 9600 a year for just one airplane and liability only for myself as sole pilot and for just the summer months. Needless to say we shut down the Air Service.
I apologize if I ruffled some feathers with regard to "Insecure" and "lack of faith in your own skills" comment.... but flying is a serious business, it is not like driving your car down the freeway 80 miles per hour on a sunny afternoon. As we all know, flying demands various skills and knowledge that comes only by many hours of education and experience. Multiply that by the factor of time.....and you get to that adage of the "Old and Bold Pilot". If you want to protect your families, assets, property etc., don't rely on insurance to accomplish that..... insurance is only a stop gap, an after thought. The key is accident prevention.... which comes only through accepting responsibility for your actions.... your judgment..... and your developed skills. Accident reports are like story books.... as you read them....you can visualize the circumstances, and we as individuals may well have been there ourselves at one time or another. We set limits according to our skills and knowledge.... Such as don't go beyond a 180 if you have doubts about the outcome. If the odds are 50/50 you're probably in too deep already. Always leave yourself an out. Leave nothing to doubt. Don't exceed your or your aircrafts limits and capability, that's the "Biggie". Another fact of truth is that single pilot IFR is a very, very tenuous, mistakes are often deadly, that's why two minds are better than one. You might substitute and auto pilot for a co-pilot but that is only a tool... not a mind. Flying is serious...... if you do it for a living it is a profession and you abide by the "regs". If you do it for pleasure you set your own limits and enjoy the freedoms of a "Sunday Afternoon", the $100.00 dollar hamburger. the thrills, self satisfaction and self esteem.
There is no social responsibility. As "pilot in command" the responsibilities are yours. You are responsible for the lives on board and those who may be endangered on the ground. You are responsible for the aircraft and any damage that you may incur. As a pilot you have to accept that fact. When you hit the starter switch and the engine coughs to life it is reality time. it is responsibility time.
The uninsurred are everywhere. They are a threat, and most likely they are the impoverished, the "have nots", the uninsurable. They are generally not responsible persons, not pilots, not aircraft owners. You cannot "collect" from them for they have nothing. It is a fact that we have to accept. I would like to think that those of us who are in the aviation industry are not impoverished, not irresponsible but are in a professional group who pride themselves with their accomplishments and their aircraft.
If you have never been to "Oskosh", "Sun and Fun" or the "Reno Air Races", you should. It is a taste of professionalism.... of what could be for you and yours.
I do not ever anticipate that you as a "lesser" pilot would ever taxi into me.... or cause me harm. I would be more concerned about the drive to the airport!
Now that I have bent your ear, maybe you can appreciate some realities of aviation. I vividly remember my first solo flight as do we all. It is our treasure..... let's not take it lightly.
