Just an FYI for USAA insurance members (ie, qualified current & ex-military members). I was on their web site this morning and saw they do provide Aviation service. Their minute blurb is copied below. They probably don't do the underwriting but it's at least worth looking into if you haven't already. If their airplane insurance is anything like their car insurance it probably can't be beat now that Phoenix is out. Since just about every military officer is a usaa member, they surely have dealt with a LOT of pilots and pilot questions/demands. I'll call Monday myself and let you know what I find out.
If anyone's already insured by them on the list, would you mind sharing what you know?
Thanks,
Lucky

Before purchasing aviation insurance, it is important to look at some of the contract coverages that are not always so obvious. Besides comparing hull and liability coverage and premium, these are some questions to ask when you shop for coverage:
Can other pilots fly my aircraft? If so, what are the requirements?
How much expense reimbursement will the policy allow for other pilots flying the aircraft?
Does the policy provide coverage for the use of a non-owned aircraft?
Does this company provide legal representation if I'm sued?
What rating has A.M. Best assigned to this insurance company?
Is there premises liability coverage for the hangar or tie-down space?

I had aircraft insurance through USAA about 20 years ago and was generally
happy with them, but although I still have my autos through them they are less
competitive and the service is worse than in the past. Still, it is worth a
look.
But be careful. I had motorcycle insurance through them for 2 years before I
figured out that their rate was over 6 times higher than firms that
specialize in motorcycles. When I complained they said that they were trying to
discourage motorcycle riding among their policy holders. They never said anything
about it until asked.

I've been insured with USAA for the past 8 years for my truck, but I
don't think they insure experimental airplanes. I could be wrong.
I'm on my second year with NationAir for my RV-7 and it seems like I
called USAA first before going with Nation.

Seems like they do handle experimentals through AIG.
Here's a private email reply. I'll keep it anonymous but here's the bottom line:
"In one hour from first phone call, call back offered $60,000 hull, $1 mil per occurance, $100k per passenger, NO minimum instructor time required, $950.
My renewall just came through the other day for 2005. Went up a little, $1093 for the next year, same coverage. Their underwriter is AIG Aviation."
I'll be giving them a call Monday.
I also asked a high time retire AF pilot buddy of mine tonight what he's paying for his RV8 coverage. Around $950 is what he said but he's got something like 17 to 19 THOUSAND multi-engine hours alone and some F-86 time on top of that including additional miscellaneous AC time.
