Hello Mark:

Sorry to take so long on getting back to you.

>From your explanation of your air flow control system I think it is a great idea. Air through the cowl, over the engine – through the engine and out the cowl is what keeps our engine purring. OK Roaring.
I have often thought about moving the oil cooler to the front of the engine so as to have easier control of the oil temps when the weather or location of the plane changes. I like your idea, I will look into doing that. And if you might have read my recent post “The proof is on the Dipstick”, I sure could have used your device.

Just had a thought ... I did this on a Grumman AA-5, but have not done it as yet on the RV-6. Take some temperature readings on the backside of the baffling and off of the Mag(s) and Vacuum Pump. The reason why I say this is you would not want an increase in temperatures there. Why increase the oil temperature while scarifying the cooling of these critical components. I was able to get that area down to 135 Deg F on a 95 Deg F day.

Barry,

I solved my cool oil temp problems by bolting an 0.063" aluminum
plate on the air-OUTLET side of the oil cooler, covering up the
bottom 2/3. Initially, the plate was too small (about 1/3 of
outlet) and required up-sizing to get the temps up. Also using a
Symtec oil sump pre-heater which really helps at start-up.

When the OAT was 15-25F, cylinder head temps ran 295-320F. The plan
is to make two fiberglass inlet covers which will cover the inboard
1/3 of the cowl inlets, attaching with a couple of screws into
nutplates. This should allow winter operation here in ND (on nice
days only, of course), and would be easy to remove during a fueling
stop if making a trip further south. Preliminary results with
improvised inlet covers resulted in CHT's of 320-370F and oil temps
of 150-170F.

I would appreciate any comments, positive or negative.
