Has anyone used or is using this unit? Harbor Freight, Central
Pneumatic 4.5 hp, 21 gal vertical tank. Oil lubed, 110v. 125 psi max
with 8.8 cfm @40 psi. At $150 is this a decent value?
Thanks,
Jim

Can't answer your question specifically Jim,don't have one. But, after several years experience with Harbor Freight, I have one rule... if it has more than 1 moving part.. forget it. JMHO

Hi Dan,
It may not be the quietest compressor out there, but it's not that
loud... My neighbors can't hear it in their houses...
I guess the bottom line is that it works.. it got me through the
empennage and wings (and now about 1/3 of fuselage).. so I'm happy
with it. Even if it breaks down, I'll throw it away and get another
one.. and still save a few bucks compared to that $399 one :)
I ordered mine online.. took a few weeks to get it, but it was a free
shipping deal, so I waited patiently...:)

Jim,
I bought the aforementioned compressor; it worked well, but was
waaaaaay too noisy. I returned it and bought the 26 gal. Husky (made
by Campbell Hausfeld) at HD for $377. Much better quality (cast iron
vs. aluminum) and much quieter. Don't buy into everyone saying oil-
lubed compressors are quiet. Make sure it's BELT-DRIVEN.
Lastly, you get what you pay for.

Gotta be oil lubed, gotta be belt driven, gotta be iron, and for my money gotta be 220v. Things like disc sanders and DA's use a ton of air. You might want to check around your area for compressor repair shops selling used/rebuilt units.

I bought one of these about 2 years ago. It is not as loud as an
oiless unit, but not as quiet a belt driven unit. I had a problem
with the safety relief valve popping off just before the pressure
switch shut the motor off, until I readjusted the pressure switch
down. The head bolts needed to be retorqued to eliminate the leaks
from the gasket. But for $150 it works pretty well. I've used it
for painting as well as riveting. I use electric drills for the
drilling.

Hi
New member here. I haven't started building yet, just ordered the
preview plans. I plan to spend a few months getting my garage ready
and gathering tools.
My question, is how big a compressor is adequate? I don't want to
spend a lot of time waiting for it to recharge. I'll be using mostly
pneumatic tools, but not a paint sprayer. And I'm a bit tight on
space. Also, only 120V available.
Thanks

I've got a 26 gallon campbell hausfeld...works great and I got it
for a song at lowes (closeout). Anyway, recharged about every 20
minutes during light riveting with squeezer, about every 10 during
heavy drilling, probably no good with paint sprayer. It is 120
volt, cast iron, and oil lubed (important for quiet operation).
Best of luck and don't look back, you will love it!

Most 5 hp 25 gallon units will work OK. The Oil free ones tend to be more noisey. We have a Porter Cable unit that is oil free, but is very quiet. It has a 25 gallon upright tank and is portable. It runs at 175 psi, has a built on regulator, and has very quick recovery. Most tools work fine, the grinders tend to use a lot of volume, so some catch up time is needed for extended use of these tools. It runs on 120v 15 amps. It is the CPFC2TV3525VP model.

Hi Phil and Merry Christmas! As I was looking for a compressor I saved the following post. It is somewhat reasonable. The only thing I might add is make sure the engine is cast iron and not aluminum if you want to be able to hear yourself think. If it is belt driven, even better. Dan
...I also made the same mistake that many of the other builders made
when I bought my first air compressor. It was to small and also was
an oiless model. I have since sold it and bought a bigger one with
an oil bath compressor. Before I bought it, I did a lot of research
so not to make the same mistake again and it seems to have worked
out all right. The following is what I believe to be the minimums
when purchasing an air compressor.
1)60 Gal. tank ( for reserve)
2)10 CFM's @ 90 PSI (minimum)
3)100-130 PSI working pressure (minimum)
4)230 volts (if possible)
5)Tank should be rubber mounted for noise reduction.
6)Tank should have an easy drain cock with flex hose.
7)Oil lubricated
Hope this is some help!

Phil,
I am using a Porter Cable 6 hp, 25 gal, 135 psi, 120 volt oiled compressor.
I have used it regularly for almost two years now. I had to replace the
regulator about a year ago. Replaced it with a Parker. It has worked out
just fine otherwise. It sprays primer nicely. I also bought the Porter Cable
paint sprayer. Both from Lowes, but shop around for the best prices. I am
tight on space, too, so I built a modified EAA1000 style table to stand over
it in my workshop and that has worked out really well.

Thanks everyone, I've got a pretty good idea what to look for now.
I was afraid I'd need a 60gal with a 240v cord into my kitchen.
Thanks again.
