Home -> Vans Air Force topic: Riveting Lap Joint on Bottom Wing

Author: "ctbecker890" <ctbecker890@...> Time: Tue Dec 28, 2004 6:07 am PST Link

I'm a little confused. The manual says to hold off on riveting the
overlap seam (without the rib) until finished with the rest of the
outboard bottom skin. If you do that there doesnt appear to be any
access to do that riveting? I think this is incorrect. Ideas?

I riveted that lap joint as I progressed riveting along the wing. Maybe
they meant wait until you're finished drilling all the holes, dimpling,
and lining everything up.

I riveted the overlap rivets last like the plans said. Not sure if it is
critical. The top skins, I riveted the aft most half laying on my back,
reaching up on each side with bucking bar or rivet gun. Wasn't too bad. From
the top I had to reach down on each side to finish. This took some doing.
You almost need another joint in your forearm. This would have been much
easier with some help. The bottom skins have the access ports, so they were
pretty easy to rivet alone. Hope this helps.
