Home -> Vans Air Force topic: Amateur Radio in RVs?

Author: "hudsonhillbilly" <hudsonhillbilly@...> Time: Tue Dec 28, 2004 5:25 pm PST Link

Hello -

I wonder if there are any other amateur radio operators out there who
are building or flying RVs.

I am building a RV-7A and am beginning to think about putting in a
Yaesu FT-100 HF to UHF all band transceiver... wonder if anyone has
ideas or experience with HF antennas and RVs...

I am thinking of maybe getting some sort of automatic antenna tuner
and using it with a wire streching from a short mast in front of the
cockpit back to the top of the vertical stab... any ideas or
comments???

John:
Marshall M. Dues of Houston, TX has an RV-6 and operates an 100W rig ( I
believe a Yaesu). His N # is N243MD.
I don't have his phone number with me, but I am sure you can find it through
directory assistance. His airplane is at KDWH.
Good luck.

I didn't know that was legal, from an FCC perspective.

I know zilch about amateur radio but I know that Marshall's plane has
his antenna just as you describe. Marshall takes a look at this list on
occasion but I'll forward your message to him. I am sure he'd be happy
to discuss this.

Be warned, if you use that kind of antenna in a group hangar, folks are apt
to use it as a clothes line... ask Marshall. It also adds some contortions
to entry/exit to avoid having your ear removed (acts like a cheese slicer.)

Operating amateur radios from airplanes is legal just as it is to operate
maritime mobile stations on vessels. You just have to use your HAM call sign.
I know Marshall Dues has been doing it for years.

Yes, operation of a HAM radio from a plane is totally legal as long as the basis rules of Amateur Radio are followed. First being a licensed HAM must have control of the unit. Not that he is the only one aloud to operate it. Unless it is A1 operation. And the suffix AM (Aeronautical Mobile) must be added to the station call.
As for how to do it: I did it many years ago running 5 Watts on 20 & 40 Meters in A1 mode (CW – Continuos Wave)(Morse Code for the lay person) in a Piper Tri-Pacer. Also did 2 Meter AM.
For an antenna I used a end fed longwire with a small funnel on the end. Take a look in the ARRL Amateur Radio Handbook, the OLD books use to have them listed.
As for the wattage: DON’T exceed the current supply capabilities of the alternator or the supply wire. You will find little wattage is required. Your biggest problem will be ignition noise - You may want to consider 2 M FM instead of the low bands. Yet I worked South America, Africa, and across the USA with only 5 Watts.
Suggestion: Let the WORLD know you are going to do this and have a Date, Time and Frequency planed. You will have a Pile-Up on you.

Hello, John, and other Amateur Radio Operators,

I have been using ham radio equipment in my RV-6 for the past several
years, now. I currently am using a 25 watt single sideband transceiver
that fits right in the avionics stack and looks OK there. I installed a
quarter wavelength (99 inches at 29.000 megahertz) longwire in the same
manner that you would use an ADF sense antenna. It comes up through the
top skin forward of the windshield through a porcelain feedthru stud,
and goes up above the rollover structure (I have a sliding canopy) to a
six inch tall airfoil shaped wooden mast that is epoxied to the
windshield fairing, and then goes straight back to the tip of the
vertical stabilizer where it is anchored with the same type of hardware
that an ADF sense antenna is attached to a Cessna fin. The length is
determined by the location of an insulator and tension spring at 99
inches. This puts the antenna in the middle of the Ten meter amateur
band and is satisfactory for SSB use down at 28.300 Mhz, AM at 29.000
Mhz, and the FM repeater system up around 29.600 Mhz.

I am currently using the HTX-10 transceiver that was sold by Radio Shack
several years ago. It is 25 watts on SSB and FM, and only 7 watts on
AM, but I have successfully chatted with many European countries while
flying from Houston to Phoenix, for example. The only thing bad about
this particular transceiver is it has an absolutely horrible microphone
circuit that contains a lot of special mic biasing and transceiver
function external switching that goes throughout the coiled cord to the
microphone. That prevents me from wiring the ham transceiver into the
headset that I normally use for regular avionics.

The fact that all RVs are quite loud from an ambient cabin noise
standpoint makes using the HTX-10's hand mic a very poor choice, so I
have to slow the plane down to under about 140 mph just to quiet down
the cabin noise while using that hand mic. I sometimes go up and loiter
at low throttle settings and orbit an area during ham radio contests in
order to make a lot of "aeronautical mobile" contacts. Ground bound
hams seem to get a kick out of talking to an airplane! It's not all
that different from talking to a ham who is "maritime mobile", though.

I do want to change this transceiver out for something like a Ten-Tec
Scout 505 because it has plug in modules for every ham band of
frequencies from 160 meters to the 10 meter band. The only thing I
would need then, would be an automatic antenna tuner to make up for the
obviously too short longwire afforded by a small plane like an RV-6. I
don't want to get involved with a trailing wire HF antenna on such a
small plane. Besides, automatic antenna tuners are more practical now.

Greg Young is right about some people making use of your longwire
antenna for a clothes line! It has happened!

Thanks also to Eduardo, Martin, Phil, and Barry for their input.
Amateur radio "aeronautical mobile" in enjoyable, legal, and very doable
as long as it doesn't interfere with pilot duties.
