Darrell,

I downloaded the basic panel file Van's. Me and a friend (OK, mostly my friend) hacked away in Turbo Cad(?). I was modeling from my uncut panel with poster board circles taped to it representing the various instruments, radios, ect.

I emailed the completed file to a local water cutter. I dropped the panel off and discussed things to make sure we were both on the same page. Two days and $60 later, I had the panel and it was perfect. It only needed the usual deburring. All for less than the price of an instrument punch and jig.

This has been my first and only experience doing this type of thing but my impression is that any automated cutting process will be as accurate as your file (garbage in, garbage out). I would start with the yellow pages and save on shipping and most likely pricing as well. There may be advantages/disadvantages with the various automated cutting methods (laser, water), I don't really know, but I am sold on the water cutting. Good luck.

I would like to add that with water jet, you can have your panel
cut out of plastic to check the clearance of braces, etc.,
behind the panel. My son did the layout, so I don't know the
details of the panel cutting. We used the 'Affordable Panels'
mounting and he had the aluminum blanks to work from.
I mounted the instruments on the plastic panels and had to
adjust their locations a little. He then handed me aluminum
panels a week later that fit very well.
With 8-3" and 12-2" instruments, I don't know how I would
have fit them all in without some way of trial fitting them.
