Greetings Fellow Aviators,

I spoke with Van himself about this issue at SNF 2005. My statement was
quite simple, if Van's would develop a conversion kit to 6" wheels, I would
buy it. He was very pleasant and responded by saying thanks for the input,
we will take it into consideration.

I believe if 5,000 guys said something similar to the company they would
seriously consider doing it. It could be a win-win deal for them in that
the nose gear collapse incident rate would be reduced, and guys flying off
of rough turf would have an option to make the operation safer.

One RV builder has converted to 6" wheels by making bushings that slide over
the 5" axles. I don't know what he did about the nose fork but the mains
were easily converted to 6". The nose wheel will require a larger fork and
a 5" wheel would be an improvement. The conversion also would require
larger wheel pants.

I agree vans tires are sometimes to small. I have had 3 flat tires on my
nose wheel due to low air pressure and a rough field. Vans answer to a poor
nose gear is design is lower your tire pressure so I did. Bad move, I am ready
for a change

I brought this same topic up sometime last year as I am now forced to operate my -4 off a really rough and often soft field (the new FBO has a 'different' view of how turf needs to be managed).
A spokesman for Van's told me then that they did try the 6" tires on the -4 and saw something like a 10+kt cruise loss - with wheel pants.

The added weight of those larger wheels and wheel pants had me wondering of the increased forces the spring gear would have to accommodate. It was that 'extra' force issue on the weldments that dropped my interest a notch. Kinda the devil-you-know business.

However, I am still interested in the larger wheels/tires IF there were some simple (easy) way to convert back and forth with the 5".
