Home -> Vans Air Force topic: AeroElectric-List: recharge/jump start recepticle

Author: luckymacy@... Time: Sun Aug 21, 2005 5:29 pm PDT Link

Thanks for all the responses. I ordered the Piper receptical and plug from ACS. It's just what I was looking for and the link below confirmed it. I think it can easily work for both a battery tender and jump starter.

6 years of flying my RV-4 I never neeed to jump it. As far as
charging in the airplane I had a small plug in the cockpit and just
put the charger on the wing and plug it in to the cockpit jack. For
aft battery you could have a plug in the baggage compartment.

The weight and cost of a external plug is not worth it. Can you
return it? I think it is a option that is not needed.

This; "6 years of flying my RV-4 I never need to jump it. As far as

put the charger on the wing and plug it in to the cockpit jack. For

I color-coded the (+), (-) and with the ground prong, the reversal of the poles is impossible. Neat system for keeping the batt charged during those cold winter days.

Nope, I disagree with you and think it's a good idea. I have the small odyssey battery which is not going to be easy to replace out in the middle of nowhere FBO and I want to do my share of cross country flying. I want the option of the jump start or start assist in cold weather as I have the 200hp angle valve engine so I can wear a battery down fast with dual mags. I have some electronic toys in the panel and I could see myself doing hangar flight planning and accidentally running the battery down very low that way also. There are a lot of scenarios like that. In my limited GA experience, I've seen a couple guys leave their master on for an afternoon and have to sweat out a hand prop to get going again. Not fun if you are not trained and practiced and don't have parking breaks, etc.

I want every chance I can get to avoid that. I also do not want to leave the canopy open to get access to trickle charging the battery so for me this is perfect.

Lucky: how much are you going to need a JUMP?

If the battery is dead (presumably from leaving the master on) you
need to charge it first. Jumping a dead battery and going flying in
an airplane is not a great idea. It also loads the alternator, which
can put a strain on it.

I suggest if you drain the battery you use a small plug (cigarette
lighter) and wait an hour or so to get a charge on it. You don't need
thick wire to charge. I understand the need to charge, but you don't
need a high amp exterior jack to do that.

As was pointed out, cost, weight, and build time TO benefit favors
not installing a high amp jump plug in my opinion. There are some
ways to access the battery (under cowl or behind baggage compartment)
for charging.

So how many times have you really NEEDED to jump an airplane. Having
to wait to charge the battery for a short bit is a fair punishment
for leaving the master on.

If were talking about starting a up with a flat battery, rather than assisting a small capacity battery: one must be aware that an alternator will not charge a flat battery, as the alternator requires 'power' to excite the field circuit.

Whoa. If you jump the battery an just start it, there isn't enough
'charge' in the battery to get the alternator to generate voltage.
Charging an almost dead battery won't place any more strain on the
alternator than an almost fully charged one. Actually, the almost dead
battery will be less strain because of it's higher internal resistance.

We're back to how long you want to wait on the ramp while you trickle
charge the battery with a cigarette lighter cord. In order for this to
work, the cigarett lighter needs to be hard-wired to the battery (which
most aren't). Having any 'loads' connected upstream of the main
contactor invite that dead battery.

However, that Piper plug does something your trickle charger won't do
.... start the engine from an external source. You can get the engine
started and wait until the alternator kicks in before unplugging. And
it's a standard connection. You have to carry an adapter, and Lucky
carries his installed plug (albeit maybe with less weight.) Lucky will
be long gone while those with a trickle charger cable wait impatiently
on the ramp.

I can't speak to Lucky, but in my case I was on a cross country .... on
my way home ...... when I overnighted. The plane was a little hard to
start, but the elder battery chose this opportunity to tell me it needed
replacement. We pulled the top cowl (Grumman AA-1B) and jumped it with
battery cables from a car ..... it's Sunday morning and the place was
deserted except for this fellow and his dog that stopped to help. We
got the engine started and ran it for a while, shut down and put the
cowl back on. Started the engine, but couldn't get the alternator back
online. It was an uncontrolled field, and so was my destination. I bit
the bullet and flew home. The only thing I really missed was my radio
because I couldn't give and receive position reports in the uncontrolled
patterns. I musta looked like an owl as I scanned for traffic.

Bottom line, for just a little weight penalty, Lucky has received some
piece of mind and ability to quickly extract himself from a poor
situation rapidly. As you can guess, my -10 will have an external
ground start capability ..... and it'll probably be the Piper part.

Irrelevant. I haven't had a need to jump out of the plane in flight either but I designed the canopy attachment to give me a fighting chance to do so as others have as well.

I got a few emails on said subject and no one said they undid their install because they didn't end up using it or for any other reason.

I've seen a couple of successful flights home and heard of a few more on batterys that were low enough to require hand props. The couple of times I've seen it done, they'd have jumpstarted them if they had the foresight to plan for it. I'm not concerned.

time to move on..hopefully my piper style ground power parts arrived today.
-------------- Original message --------------
Lucky: how much are you going to need a JUMP?

I'm sure the battery manufactures love it when we jump a battery that we've drained. The fast recharge does a good job of eliminating a lot of the batteries remaining life. A slow 2 amp trickle charge is best for the battery, if you can afford the time. It will come down to time or money after a discharge like that.

jmtipton <jmtipton@btopenworld.com> wrote: If were talking about starting a up with a flat battery, rather than assisting a small capacity battery: one must be aware that an alternator will not charge a flat battery, as the alternator requires 'power' to excite the field circuit.

Actually, jumping a dead battery IS a slow recharge since the internal
resistance is so high. Watch your charger ammeter when you recharge a
dead battery. The needle starts at near zero, and slowly climbs to the
charger's working current .... say 10 amps .... and then slowly drops
off again as the battery nears capacity and voltage. The harm to the
battery has already been done. The total discharge creates lead
sulphates that coat the grid, cutting down on the available current. A
rapid discharge to dead creates a really hard sulphate (type 2, I
believe) which is really hard to get rid of. Google 'desulphator' for

I have found the BatteryMinder model 12112
http://www.vdcelectronics.com/batteryminder_12v_1a.htm
keeps my airplane and classic car batteries in peak condition. It desulphates in the maintenance mode after it has gone through the charging mode.
Kit comes with a cable that attaches permanently to the battery with a remote receptacle that can be fed to the baggage compartment.
Diversified Aviation Services out of Oklahoma has them on sale.

I wonder just how good the BatteryMinder is when faced with an already
heavily sulphated battery. On a battery that is kept charged and cycled
reasonably, there isn't much sulphate to deal with. However, if you run
the battery down rapidly to zilch, the sulphate becomes a major issue.

Take a look at http://www.flex.com/~kalepa/desulf.htm for a good start
on an education on desulphating batteries.

A slow 2 amp trickle charge is best for the battery, if you can afford the time. It will come down to time or money after a discharge like that.
